Aquaculture: Mussels
Location
Hong Kong
Date
2025
This project investigates the physiological mechanisms underlying probiotic-mediated thermal resilience in green mussels (Perna viridis). Using a monitoring system (MeGaH) to track metabolism, gape, and heart rate during acute heating trials, we demonstread that coral-derived probiotics significantly extended the temperature at which mussels begin to experience heat stress, raising the threshold by 3.4°C compared to placebo controls. This demonstrates that our persistent probiotics significantly extend the thermal limits of mussels, offering a practical solution for farmers facing rising water temperatures.
