Bringing Probiotics to Abalone Farming: A Field Visit to Lamma Island
Prof. Luo, together with our scientist advisor Prof. Russell, visited an abalone farm on Lamma Island and met with farm owner Wendy. Prof. Luo gave a detailed introduction to how probiotics work in aquaculture and their potential applications.

Abalone farming faces real challenges: heat sensitivity, high summer mortality, and slow growth. These are exactly the problems that persistent probiotics can address. By improving host thermal tolerance, survival, and growth performance, probiotics offer a natural and scalable solution for farmers.
Wendy committed to trialing probiotics at her farm. The potential for a naturally occurring probiotic to deliver long-term improvements is, in her words, “particularly exciting and of significant interest.”
For aquaculture operators, it shows the path from lab science to farm-level impact. We are excited to work with farmers like Wendy to bring durable probiotic solutions to abalone and other high-value species.
